Potty Prize

 Contributed by Kim Stumpf

The following idea can be adapted for the workplace…

My husband is a grade 4 teacher. In his classroom,he keeps a plastic toilet (yep, I said toilet) that’s filled with mini chocolate bars and other goodies.

Potty-reward-300

When his students do something good, get ‘student of the day’, complete a small assignment for a dip, or he has one of his famous lightening round quizzes, they get to dip into the toilet.

Depending on the task or the stakes, sometimes they get to “double dip”.

It is such a hit and it is amazing what those kids will do just to get a dip in the toilet.

Most kids are out of school for the summer, so it is the perfect time to teach them leadership skills.

Our country needs strong and courageous men and women who can lead with integrity. Teaching leadership skills to teens is a great way to polish the brilliant diamonds that will become our country’s leaders of the future.

Any student can grow in leadership capabilities with the proper instruction and practice.

It’s easy for teachers and youth group leaders to teach these leadership skills with the Today’s Teens – Tomorrow’s Leaders, Instructor’s Manual and the on-line Instructor’s Center which contains the latest updates, forms, tips, and much more.

Workplace Energy: Attitude is Everything – Quick Tip

Posted by:  :  Category: Uncategorized

Flyingman

If misery loves company, how come no one likes a pity party?

Probably because all that’s served are the blues and negativity – energy vampires that are deadly to workplace morale.

In today’s marketplace, negativity is everywhere, bringing morale low which in turn decreases productivity.

It is more important than ever for supervisors to learn how to increase the energy at their workplace.

——————————————

So what’s a supervisor to do?

——————————————

Teach your employees the benefits of having an “Attitude of Gratitude”.

Instead of focusing on negatives, have your employees take two minutes to make a list of the
many things for which they are grateful.

As they become aware of their many blessings, you will see their sadness transformed into happiness.

This is one of several easy and effective ways to increase workplace energy from the Employee Success Toolkit.

Increase Your Workplace Energy is one of the 13 essential tools in the Employee Success Toolkit.

Employee Morale

“Get It Together” Gift Baggies

Contributed by Stacey Shelton

I am the Administrative Assistant for a “Morale Challenged” accounting office at a construction company in Kansas City, Missouri.

I made up survival bags for our office employees. Each bag contained a

candle, scented lotion, the Staples Easy button, and a chocolate bar that I

labeled “Emergency Chocolate”.

It also contained a rolled up memo that said:

“The ‘Get it Together’ gift baggie – everything you need to get yourself to your ‘Happy Place’.

 - Get your senses engaged and light a candle. It will create a peaceful scent

that will linger into the hall and make everything better.

 - It always makes you feel good when you smell good, so use a little Bath & Body Lotion to smooth out the rough spots in your day.

 - Use the Easy Button at will…(If nothing else, it will make you smile.)

 - When all else fails, eat chocolate.

I taped the following around the chocolate (Hershey’s) bar:

 - For immediate relief of: uncontrollable sensation to bite your tongue, in

place of using swears words that might cause prolonged stress and unwanted

happenings and/or uneasy discussions with HR.

 - For temporary relief of: thorny coworkers, griping subcontractors, nagging

bosses, whining project managers, sassy assistants, far too early fed-ex

guy, too short a day, just wanting to shred everything.

 - Directions for use: Tear open wrapper, break off desired dosage, and

consume. Repeat dosage as required, until finished. If symptoms persist, consult your local Admin for

additional Rx.

 - Nutrition Facts:

Serving Size: Whatever you want

Servings Per Container: It’s all yours

Calories: What’s that?

Total Fat: Don’t care

Cholesterol: Nada

Sodium: Not a speck

Total Carb: That’s so 2005

Sugar: Whatever works

Protein: Gotta get it from somewhere

Vitamins: All I need is a little C

(It’s in there – 1% is better than 0%.)

A tidy way to zip up the above idea is to use our ebook – 101 Captivating Motivational Quotes. You can print out individual quotes, roll them up and tie them with colorful ribbon.

Each quote has been formatted to be printed on bordered or colored paper and can be displayed on desks, walls, anywhere! These quotes will instantly create a positive work environment and will be treasured for years to come. Your employees’ morale will be ‘in the bag’.

Communication: Making Connections

Posted by:  :  Category: Uncategorized
Communication

What does an Academy Award winner from the glamorous world of Hollywood have in common with a mail clerk who has just been promoted to supervisor? Plenty.

Neither person won or was promoted without help. That’s right. Someone helped that person win that award or get that promotion.

For the award winner it was the writer, producer, director, other actors, lighting people, sound people, the Academy itself, etc., etc. that financed the project, made the winner look and sound good, and nominated and awarded the winner.

For the newly promoted mail clerk, it was co-workers whose problems the mail clerk helped solve, and the manager who saw the mail clerk’s potential and actually did the promoting.

——————————————

What should this matter?

——————————————

Nobody achieves success alone. For your employees to succeed they will need help getting to the top. Encourage them to develop a social network of people within their  workplace community.

Have staff look for common interests and experiences from others in different departments within your company.

They will soon see each other as real people and not just computer programmers, marketing people, or mail clerks. This personal connection will be make it easier for everyone to want to help each other, and as a result, everyone benefits and succeeds.

Successful Workplace Communication is one of the 13 essential tools in the Employee Success Toolkit.

Employee Sponsored Lunches

Contributed by  Courtney W.

We are a small office of 21 employees and we have “Employee Sponsored Lunches” once a month. There are a couple of guys here who do all the work. I assist, as needed.

The guys do the grocery shopping and cook at home. We have crock pots and warming trays here to keep it hot. We each pay $4 and we get lunch. Everyone eats together and we just mingle… not much time for that during the day. It is a nice break.

———

You can add some real gravy to the above lunch idea by handing out some appreciation with the cutlery.

We have made it very easy for you to do that with our ebook, 40 Recognition Certificates. Your employees can keep their certificates and treasure them forever. The great news is, it only costs you a piece of paper. And, these colorful certificates can be printed over and over… for years.

Customize the certificates with employees’ names. Simply type in the recipient’s name in the space provided. Then print, roll them up and tie with a ribbon.

Communication: Sometimes You Need a Little Magic – Quick Tip

Posted by:  :  Category: Uncategorized

Magicwords

Here’s a story I’d like to share….

The charts at Sally’s office must be filed at the end of each day. The task has been assigned to her co-worker, Mary. If Mary doesn’t do it, then Sally must.

Sally watches Mary prepare to leave – without doing the filing…again. Unaware of how this is affecting her co-worker, Mary is completely surprised when Sally pounces.

Sally: “You never help me! You are always leaving the charts for me to file.”

Mary: “What?! I don’t know what you’re talking about! I do so help you!”

Sally: “No you don’t.”

Mary: “Yes I do!”

Sally: “No you don’t!”

You see where this is going? That’s right…exactly nowhere. Sally will not be getting the help she wants, plus she has just alienated Mary.

You see, the words “always” and “never” are negative words because they are rarely true and exaggerate a situation. Since they are usually used to criticize, people feel attacked and can become very defensive.

Why Does This Matter?

Think about it. If a person you are trying to communicate with focuses on your exaggeration and entirely ignores your message, what’s the point?

Then How Do You Get Someone to Help You?

You can use the words – “often” and “seldom” – to explain your feelings and wishes, so there is no need for your co-worker to get defensive, and you are more likely to get the cooperation you are seeking.

Let’s play that scene again, but this time Sally uses a more positive tact.

Sally: “Since you seldom offer to help me file the charts, I get frustrated because I often have to stay late to get the filing finished.”

Mary: “I’m sorry, Sally. I’ve been really swamped. I didn’t think about you having to take up the slack. Can we work out a plan so that we can share the filing?”

You see? Mary listened to Sally. Sally felt validated, she’ll get the help she needs, and the co-workers remain on good terms.

Talking so that you will be heard is crucial. That’s why – Magic Words that Change Negative to Positive - is one of the 13 essential tools in the Employee Success Toolkit.

The Single Greatest Key to Improving Customer Service – Quick Tip

Posted by:  :  Category: Uncategorized

 Customer service

Sam Walton once said, “There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.”

Unfortunately, many employees don’t understand this very important concept.

Why should this matter?

Without customers your company would not be in business, and no one would have a paycheck.

Management can stress to employees that their paychecks may be distributed through the company, but their salary comes from the customers.

Train your employees to visualize customers adding to their salary every time they come in contact with them. Staff will be more likely to thank the customers with outstanding service.

A Morale Boosting Arrangement

Contributed by Kay Bowman

Here is one idea I have recently used with good success. I bought a bouquet of flowers that our vice president presented to one employee with a card. The card stated that they were to enjoy the flowers for one hour and then experience the joy of giving and pass them on to another employee within our facility.

The only rules were they could only keep the flowers for one hour and they had to be passed to different departments (not staying in one department all day.)

At
the end of the day, eight different random people enjoyed receiving
flowers and then the thrill of giving, as well. It was well received by
everyone.

It was interesting to see where the flowers were sent, we had each person who received flowers sign the card before passing them on. We plan to do this again at random times throughout the year.

A. The Arctic Tern. After breeding in the Arctic Circle, these birds migrate during the Northern Hemisphere winter to the border of the Antarctic ice pack. The roundtrip migration is almost equal to flying all the way around the earth — totaling approximately 21,750 miles (35,000 kilometers).

Meetings: Bring an Attitude of Participation – Quick Tip

Posted by:  :  Category: Uncategorized

Meeting

“Nothing is a waste of time if you use the experience wisely.”

Rodin said that, and I believe it’s true, not only in everyday life, but in business meetings as well. Let’s face it…meetings happen. So, instead of bringing doughnuts to your next one, how about bringing an attitude of participation?

After all, if it’s necessary to spend your precious time in a meeting, then make it worth your while.

How?

Think about ideas you can contribute that will add value to the meeting.

Look at the meeting as a perfect opportunity to get an important message across. Try to make it relevant to the meeting’s agenda or some idea that will benefit the company.

In some cases, however, it may be an important message of a more general nature, like a community concern or project, etc.

Whatever it is, the message becomes your mission and your contribution.

Meetings can do much to advance your career, that is why - How to Make an Impact at Meetings -
